NMTF Interview, April 2009

The National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) is in full support of the Buy Local Campaign and I thank them for their help. You can read BLoC's first media interview in their 'Market Times' magazine for June 2009. Read the full article below.

The Benefits of Buying Local

A trader from Devon has launched a Buy Local campaign (BLoC) aming to increase shopper awareness of the benefits of purchasing foodstuffs and produce from local markets and retailers.

Matthew Harris, owner of the Devonshire Deli, trades in West Country cheeses, fudge and handmade vegetarian pizzas on retail and farmers markets in Exeter and Newton Abbot. All his goods are produced in the area and sourced through connections in his local community. This commitment to 'thinking local' and firmly believing in the benefits of shopping in the local area for comsumers has led Matthew to establish BLoC, a campaign that has national aspirations.

A key aim of the campaign is to promote shopping at your local markets, Matthew stresses that, "for the consumer, shopping locally at markets and from small

retailers has the benefits of supporting your neighbours and local communities. Shoppers will know where their food has come from, they will be helping the envionment by lowering pollution and saving on air miles and keep their local economy going during these tough economic times."

To kick-start the campaign, Matthew will be involved in promoting the campaign on regional radio and press and is looking for support from all members who endorse the ethos of trading and shopping locally.

The BLoC logo is available for download on the Devoshire Deli's website. The webite itself is packed with information about BLoC, including a forum where you can forward your opionons on the campaign direct to Matthew.
