organicARTS
OrganicARTS promotes the arts and rural issues
through educational visits and walks, classes, workshops, community
projects, exhibitions and performances. These take place at West Town
Farm, other local farms and in the wider community.
OrganicARTS is run by a group of experienced
educators and artists who work in partnership with the farmer, Andrew
Bragg. We are supported by a wide network of volunteers and a group of
dedicated trustees.
OrganicARTS is involved in a wide range of
projects and events.
- Organic Learning - Mind Maps - This is a project to
encourage visitors to add their own ideas about what they learn.
- city2farm - Projects linking city based groups with
the farm.
- Working Within Woods - Regenerating neglected
woodland and learning old and new skills.
- Environmental - Projects involving water, power and
recycling.
- Earth Horse - A giant horse ploughed in a field by
giant horses.
- Apple Day - A celebration of the West Town orchard
and of apples. We held an Apple Day with a range of activities taking
place in the Barn and the Orchard.
- Cow Poems - The West Town milking herd was sold at
auction on the 24th January.
- Nine Artists and One Farm - OrganicARTS was
involved in last year's 9 Days of Art Event. 9 Artists exhibited work
inspired by the Farm over a 9 day period under the name of Nine Artists
and One Farm.
- Text+Image - Adults and children explore the farm
with a Text+Image bag. They gather images with a digital camera and
text on an Alphasmart Neo keyboard. The collection of images and text
is then presented as a Powerpoint to other visitors on the farm.
- Educational Visits - Primary school children visit
the farm to explore and engage in a range of activities including
living and growing, environmental sculpture, study of natural and man
made features and poem writing. OrganicARTSseeks to develop long term
relationships with schools allowing the children to gain a real sense
of connection with the farm. Alphington Primary School and St Davids
Primary have built farm visits into their curriculum develpment across
the whole school.
- University of Plymouth - OrganicARTS established a
relationship with lecturers at Plymouth University. Their students
studying for a module in Contextual Practice used the farm as a
resource for their course work The farm hosted an exhibition displaying
this course work with OrganicARTS acting as mentors for these students.
- The Outdoor Kiln - An outdoor kiln was made in
partnership with the Univeristy of Plymouth. It used clay dug up from
the farm for both its structure and for the pottery that groups model.
Firing took place over a 24 hour period using wood from the farm.
- Tree Circle - Tree Circle is a long term project by
Beth Richards creating a celebrational space based on the trees in the
Celtic Lunar Calendar.
- The Fresco - A traditionally constructed fresco was
created on one of the farm yard walls. Using natural pigments a group
of University of Plymouth Students painted onto lime render. They had
to work quickly for once the render has dried no more changes can be
made.
